3 boys wearing medals celebrate winning the five aside

Kingsmead fields have historically been provided both formal and informal sport and recreation space for Canterbury, with activities ranging from cricket and hockey to speedway. The smaller kingsmead Field now continues that legacy with a range of sporting and recreational facilities.

Open Space

The field offers open space for creative play and a footpath that is widely enjoyed by joggers, cyclists and walkers alike.

Sporting facilities

To supplement the open space we also offer the following facilities:

Table tennis – Our table tennis table offers the opportunity to families, friends and fellow field users to enjoy the sociable environment of the field whilst working up a sweat. Bats can be rented and balls bought from the Leisure Centre across the road. In the summer months, we leave bats and balls on the table to ensure access to those who cannot afford fees.

Football goals – two football goals have proved a popular additional to our field in recent years encouraging lots of adults and young people onto the field for individual and group kickabouts. The goals can be moved to allow the grass to regrow.

Playground – the playground is aimed at children up to 7 years of age and is situated next to the Riverside Children’s Centre & Busy Bees nursery. The design of the playground was inspired by the riverside and offers a swing, creativity boat, musical chimes and play panel, amongst other things, to cater for a range of ages and developmental needs.

Green gym – our green gym is aimed at all members of the local community, from those just starting out with gym-based exercise to those wanting an advanced or competitive workout. For more information on what equipment is included in our gym and how to use it, see our Green Gym page.

Other leisure facilities
The field has two picnic tables and several benches along the riverside and in the main open area. It is a great place for getting some fresh air, finding space for quiet contemplation or just enjoying the outdoors with family or friends.
